In order to obtain a resident permit, all students require a visa which can be obtained from the French consulate or from the French Embassy. Students must apply for a long-term visa bearing the mention "étudiant" (student).
For further information, contact your local French Embassy.
Upon arrival in France, a resident permit must be obtained. This resident permit cannot exceed one year. Applications are made at the Préfecture de Police de Paris or at the Préfecture de Versailles depending on if accommodation address is in Paris or the Versailles region.
Social cover
Student social security is part of the French social security system allowing refunds for health expenditure (medical care, hospital treatments, medicines) during their stay for students less 28 years old.
Refunds from the sécurité sociale will cover most of the outlay for health expenditure. However, students should also register with an additional student mutuelle assurance for a full protection in case of health problems.
Students must pay a contribution of an estimated 190 € to be covered for health insurance by the student sécurité sociale.
For students over 28 years old, it is compulsory to take a personal insurance covering health and personal problems in their own country before coming to France.
